Pharmacist news letter Disney product recalled

These Disney products could be making your children blind

These Disney products could be making your children blind

On April 1st, 2022 the FDA published an announcement regarding the recall of tainted Disney products (pictured below) that could be making your children blind. Three different Disney themed hand sanitizer products are being recalled due to the presence of methanol and benzene. The producer Best Brands Consumer Products, Inc. stated the impacted product lots were produced by a third-party manufacturer.

It is disheartening to learn the highly reputable Disney brand is being applied to low-quality products marketed to children. Normally these concerns are associated with inexpensive no-name brand products found at discount stores. It is shocking and worrying to see a trusted and popular brand being applied to a product failing basic safety quality checks. Furthermore, this is more concerning because hand sanitizers are designed to be applied to the skin liberally and frequently, increasing the chance of harm to our vulnerable children.

Potential dangers for consumers

Benzene can cause blood cancer and bone marrow disorders. Sufficient methanol exposure can cause blurred vision, coma, seizures, permanent blindness, permanent nervous system damage, and even death. These substances are both considered extremely dangerous. Children are at increased risk of harm and are clearly the targeted consumer of these products. Hand sanitizers are also sometimes abused by young teens and adolescents for their ethanol content.

Pharmacy Brain recommends consumers exercise caution when selecting products for application to the skin, especially for products intended for use by children. If production continues to be outsourced to unreliable factories the FDA should strongly reconsider the current system of testing products after they reach the market. As such Pharmacy Brain recommends products manufactured in the USA whenever possible.
